Turtkul district, Karakalpakstan, farmers fled the country, out of fear of punishment by the authorities. Radio Liberty (Ozodlik) reports that farmers who are not able to fulfill the quota for cotton production are afraid they will be jailed, so they decided to flee to Russia and Kazakhstan. The district administration Turtkul district partially confirmed this information, reports “Market Leader”.

Cotton Harvest Derails Uzbek Transport

“The cotton harvest in Uzbekistan has nearly brought public transport to a halt in and around the capital, Tashkent. Public buses have been repurposed to transport people to and from the fields, while most roads are closed to ordinary traffic.
